How Being Near Water Heals You

water heals

“Nothing is more softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.” -Lao Tzu

People naturally always gravitate to water. Whether it be an ocean, river, lake, waterfall, creek ect. We love water; like a moth to a flame, it just can’t be helped. There is, of course, a deeper reason for this. Have you ever stopped to think about why you feel better when you are near a natural body of water? Think of how you feel when you are walking along a beach listening to the ocean waves. Or, the calm feeling of breathing in the fresh air after it rains. How do you feel watching water flow down a creek? Today, I will shed a little light on how being near water heals you.

Humans are largely made of water, as most people know. So, I don’t think it would be a stretch to say this has an impact on why we magnetize to water; it is a part of our makeup. Our bodies’ magnetic field consists of positive and negative ions. Positive ions are harmful whereas negative ions are healing.

Water Heals Through Negative Ions

When we have too much exposure to electronic devices, equipment, and signals we become too positively charged. Thereby, draining us and harming us. I discuss this concept in detail in this post on how grounding benefits your health. On the other hand, being in nature and close to natural bodies of water, and water in motion, heals us. Negative ions are abundantly produced in these settings; restoring our energy and vital life force! They are molecules that carry an extra electron, giving them a negative electrical charge. And are found in abundance in natural settings such as forests, waterfalls, in UV rays from the sun, and oceans. Basically, they are found everywhere in nature. In these environments, negative ions are generated by the movement of air and water and can have a range of health benefits.

Simply, breathing in these invisible molecules leads to healing. They enter our bloodstream producing biochemical reactions. As a matter of fact, negative ions have very positive benefits for us! Science demonstrates how negative ions can help with depression, improve cognitive performance, reduce stress, regulate sleep, boost immune function, kill or inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, viruses, and more. Truly, we need nature, and water, to thrive!

Water Helps Mental Health

Without a doubt, the benefits of being close to the water on our mental health are apparent. This study, a 10-year-long retrospective study ending in 2018, concluded that living near a blue space, meaning near water, could play an important role in reducing the burden of mental health inequalities in urban populations. Then, in another study, researchers surveyed people in 18 different countries. Results show that people who visit blue spaces more frequently report less mental distress and better overall well-being.

In short, just being in or near water calms our nervous systems, soothes our mind, and lowers cortisol levels, similar to meditation. The sound, sight, and smell of a body of water have this magical way of soothing you. In addition, do you notice how it can create this sense of ‘awe’ in you too? It’s hard not to marvel at the sight of something so beautiful, yet mighty powerful at the same time. I am always seeking out a body of water when I can!

Water Heals Spiritually

Meanwhile, it is said that water is a conduit of universal life-force energy that can cleanse and transmute negative, low-vibrational energy. Certainly, many times over the years different healers have told me a shower or salt-water bath is beneficial when I feel low, to cleanse my energy field. Honestly, I do feel better afterward. Saltwater is especially healing since salt has known healing properties. Thus, the combination of salt and water is quite potent. As a result, swimming in the ocean is healing. Although, if you can’t make it to the ocean, adding salt and baking soda to a bath will have similar effects.

Masaru Emoto, a Japanese businessman, author, and scientist, demonstrated how our thoughts and intentions, our consciousness, literally can change the structure of water! His work on frozen water found how it actually holds and responds to the energetic frequencies directed towards it. Emoto’s revolutionary research discovered that water can copy and transfer information.

Water exposed to angry, hateful messages forms more fragmented, lopsided crystals. Likewise, when more loving, grateful vibrations are directed toward water, then the water responds by moving into symmetrical, beautiful patterns. The differences are astounding! Masaru Emoto clearly showed that when we send positive and loving intentions toward our water, we literally help to purify and energetically transform it. Therefore, water is unequivocally powerful! Next time you are drinking water or swimming in water, remember this 😉

Water Helps Fight Inflammation

Research has also found that negative ions help reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation is a natural response to injury or infection, but chronic inflammation can contribute to many health problems. This includes arthritis, heart disease, and cancer. In fact, negative Ions are powerful antioxidants that can help our body to fight free radicals. Thus, water heals by reducing inflammation and helps to prevent and lessen these health problems.

How To Get The Effects At Home

When you can’t get outside or leave your home there are ways to get some healing effects from water and nature at home.

  • Take a shower or bath
  • Buy a fountain for your backyard or in your home
  • Place a Himalayan salt lamp in your home
  • Surround yourself with plants
  • Burn beeswax candles
  • Wear tourmaline crystals or have them nearby
  • Walk barefoot in your yard
  • Go outside after it rains and breathe it all in!
